Transcendence

The human condition is one of seeking; seeking to evolve, expand, overcome….to transcend our limitations. When you achieve transcendence, you have gone beyond ordinary limitations, moving past physical needs and realities.

Humanity spends $4T a year to seek altered states of consciousness, in an attempt to transcend our daily lives and the challenges it comes with. Plato wrote that the altered state was a moment during which normal waking consciousness completely vanished, to be replaced by intense euphoria and a feeling of deep connection to a greater intelligence.

Artists have a unique ability to take us into these alter states. Straddling between the non-physical and physical worlds, artists translate what is unknown but sensed and articulate it into images, music, drama and literature. The digital artists in this exhibition offer us glimpses into transcendence through visuals that express what is beyond the natural world.

Whether it is through showing us the enormity of natural phenomenon, as Jesse Woolston articulates, Nate Mohler’s exploring the memory in dream state of a city, Obseer’s contemplation of guardian angels watching over us, working in our best interest to help us learn what we need, Michel Osei-Wusu’s astronaut’s journey through time and space in search of life's answer, to Sébastien Labrunie’s representations of overcoming pain to become our true self and freeing the captured subjects from their primary form to reveal his true colors. These ephemeral works challenge us to seek our highest state of being, to be one with nature, each other and source, offering us an opportunity to transcend.
